JAN FABRE My Queens — solo show

With “My Queens”, Fabre honours the important women in his life while simultaneously creating a dialogue with the Flemish artistic tradition within the historic setting of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.

Amongst the works of baroque master Jacques Jordaens, Fabre presents eight monumental marble bas-reliefs of women close to him. Their regal profile contrasts with their paper party hats. These pieces represent the noble character of the artist’s friendships and the festive atmosphere connected with it.

In the centre of the room, the work “My Future Queen” can be found: a white marble sculpture of Her Royal Highness Princess Elisabeth, Duchess of Brabant, also wearing a party hat. The statue of the Crown Princess is at the centre of different artistic dialogues in the space and stands right between the present and the past, looking towards the future.

Acclaimed installation and performance artist Chiharu Shiota will create an awe-inspiring, site-specific installation of thread within the beautiful 18th-century Chapel in spring 2018. Embracing all who enter within an extraordinary experience, Shiota’s project will reference the Chapel’s rich history and years of human presence, dating back to 1744, making poignant allusion to the bells that were rung, the songs that were sung, and the lives that revolved around it, from cradle to grave.
