Galerie Dutko is pleased to present an exhibition of works by the French artist Monique Frydman from September 14th to October 21st, 2023. For her fourth solo exhibition with the gallery, we will be showcasing her latest series of paintings titled “L’Autre Rive” (The Other Shore), created between 2022 and 2023.

“I would like something like the Edge of the World for my paintings.” These words are from Monique Frydman, dated December 2nd, 1988, found in her studio notebooks when they were published by Éditions de l’Atelier Contemporain in 2019.

As a major figure in abstract painting, Monique Frydman has often explored the concept of time in her work, particularly in the context of painting and the canvas. When does a work of art begin? At the Edge, as something that is in the process of being born, expanding, halfway between desire and mastery. The question of the time to paint and the time within the painting itself has always been central to Monique Frydman’s work. This question, which already occupied the artist in 1988, remains relevant in her practice today.
