Monde sauvage

Past: October 20 → November 12, 2011

Monde Sauvage (Wild World) is the name of a decorating store based in Paris, textiles and high-end furniture. It is also a graffiti seen on a metal shutter in Paris suburbs.

O.K-T

On the mode of the appropriation and the diversion, Olivier Kosta-Théfaine extracts characteristic elements of the city to throw them, once reinterpreted, in the exhibition space.

By taking support on clichés usually conveyed on the suburb to thwart them better, Olivier Kosta-Théfaine filters and recomposes the codes belonging to the city to catapult them on a new level of perception. Thus, the shards of colored glass which strew the piece of a wall evoke more a sparkling of stars than the dissuasive character of a protective anti-intervention device.

Utopia of the town planning and exoticism become confused in Souvenirs des Indes (memories of India). These concrete pieces are vestiges of the cité des Indes, a concrete of block council houses situated in Parisian suburb and blown up in 2010. Olivier Kosta-Théfaine plays on an ambiguity and takes the spectator towards a distant destination, to confront him better in bitter one reality, that of a certain failure of the town planning in suburb.

The referent is reinvented just like the Paysages de banlieues (Landscapes of the suburbs), big format sheets of papers burned, marked by a soft melancholy, remembrance of an adolescence lived in suburb.

A series of details (damages or spontaneous alterations) observed and taken from the walls of the city, isolated then reactivated by the artist composes a strange collection of abstract arts. Deviated from its origin, the vocabulary associated with the act of vandalism is then freed from its most conoted aspect to embrasse an aesthetic dimension.
