Elle accueille depuis trois ans l’art brut, Outsider et folk depuis quatre ans à Paris et tient sa 5e édition du 19 au 22 octobre 2017 à l’Hôtel du Duc. OAF Paris will return to Hôtel du Duc, and run from October 19-22, 2017, concurrent with FIAC. The fair will showcase 35 exhibitors representing 22 cities from 8 countries.

The Outsider Art Fair is the original art fair specific to self-taught art created outside the mainstream, and is the host of exhibited works by acknowledged masters like James Castle, Aloîse Corbaz, Henry Darger, Martin Ramirez, Judith Scott and Adolf Wölfli, as well as contemporary figures like George Widener, Susan Te Kahurangi King, and Dan Miller. Founded in New York in 1993, OAF was quickly recognized for its maverick spirit. The fair has played a vital role in building a passionate collecting community and broader recognition for Outsider Art in the Contemporary Art arena.

The Curated Space will be a highlight this year as it pays homage to Daniel Cordier (b. 1920) and his celebrated collection of art brut, of which he donated over 500 works to the Centre Georges Pompidou between 1973 and 1989. In the 1950s, Cordier, who had been a hero of the French Resistance, opened galleries in Paris, Frankfurt and New York, collecting and presenting the works of art brut figures and other major artists such as Jean Dubuffet, Roberto Matta, Jean Tinguely, and Robert Rauschenberg.

Program

OAF Talks 2017 will be produced in collaboration with Hôtel Drouot where two panel discussions will take place.

The first will feature a live conversation between Daniel Cordier, Anne Sauvagnargues—author and professor of philosophy at the University of Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense—and Valérie Rousseau—curator of Self-Taught Art and Art Brut at the American Folk Art Museum, New York.

A second panel, organized by art critic Paul Laster, will focus on the celebrated Cobra artist Karel Appel (1921-2006), following his critically acclaimed retrospective at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. The panel will explore Appel’s relationship with the work of Dubuffet, art brut, the city of Paris in the 1950s and 60s, as well as the influence of Cobra on contemporary art. More information on both OAF Talks will be forthcoming.
