As a worthy heir of Marcel Broodthaers and Kurt Schwitters, Philippe De Gobert constructs dreamed microachitecures. It is from the 1980’ that the artist starts conceiving models of artists’ studios, sometimes by taking some liberties towards his models. But it is especially with his way to box these miniaturized sets, literally as figuratively, by means of a camera, that we can identify him from now on. It is this progressive passage of the studio as item of exhibition to the become studio, as well this constant round trip between model and photography “model” that makes the specificity of his approach.

What seem to interest the artist are the immobility and the timelessness of this workspace that is the studio. A place of creation where time is suspended, thanks to this tense thread of the work in progress, as there is always somewhere in a hidden recess of the studio, something being made: a painting cloth lying fallow, a half naked collage… It is the space of all possibilities, the imaginary wanderings in the most concrete realizations.

Philippe De Gobert, is the prototype of the handyman, such as Claude Lévi-Strauss defines it: capable of executing a large number of diversified tasks, the construction of the model in the photographic execution, including the focus of the lighting, the paintings and drawings alterations, and even to the manufacturing.

For this new personal exhibition, the gallery will be presenting a set of models, photos and objects, just like a mini-retrospective of the artist.
