Paintings
Past: June 12 → September 26, 2015
This exhibition shows a new series of paintings-collage entitled “Nowheres”. Shirley Wegner is mostly known for her large-scale photographs of landscapes that seem sustained between real and fiction and question the relationship between documentary photography and storytelling."
Nowheres" is a series of small mixed media paintings which Wegner developed side by side with her photographical work in recent years, that shows her meticulous study of scale relationship, textures, and materials.
Similar to her work in photography, in these small paintings, she begins with no visual reference other than her own memory in order to capture ghostly images of landscapes, glimpses of memory of her home country of Israel.
It is through the materials and the searching hand that the forms appear and offer a possibility of a place: through taping together different textures and materials, through drawing and painting, an image of a place begins to surface, offering itself as both generic, and specific, at once a nowhere, and an everywhere.
