Splendour and Misery. Pictures of Prostitution in France (1850-1910)

Protean and elusive, prostitution is everywhere in late-19th-century Parisian society. Following Baudelaire, artists see in it the modern and un-academic subject par excellence. On the boulevards, in theatres or at the Opera House, it was often difficult to distinguish between honest women and venal creatures. The exhibition shows the way artists established in Paris between the Second Empire and the Belle Époque have constantly sought graphic means and explored new media to represent the universe of love for money.
