FRAC Champagne-Ardenne
Since 1984, the collection of the FRAC Champagne-Ardenne has forged a solid identity around major complementary themes: art and life; art and encounters; art and celebration; art and play. This open, forward-looking collection, comprising more than 900 works that reflect the rich diversity of contemporary practices, has over the years gained a significant standing in terms of cultural heritage.
Since 2018, the artistic agenda of the FRAC Champagne-Ardenne has explored the theme of play. As well as the entertainment and escapist value of play, it sets down rules, freely accepted by those taking part, which — by analogy with everyday existence — act as an expression of communal living.
In this respect, the full FRAC agenda, entitled The Spirit of Play, between Rules and Turbulence, is decidedly egalitarian, open to diversity, as well as instrumental in the flow of imagination.
The FRAC collection travels all year round in the Grand Est administrative region of northeast France and beyond through the organisation of exhibitions and a programme of initiatives running alongside the art shows.
This is achieved in partnership with schools and higher education establishments, cultural institutions, public bodies, local authorities and administrative establishments.
In 2017, at the request of the FRAC Champagne-Ardenne, French designer matali crasset created Capsule, an itinerant art space aimed at young visitors. This modular, stand-alone exhibit is intended for displaying artworks in unusual locations. The same year, matali crasset also designed Tripode, which makes it possible to organise artwork encounters on digital tablets in the region. Throughout the year the FRAC team conducts tours and holds workshops and outreach activities aimed at all types of audiences in line with the artistic agenda of the FRAC.
