Alexandre Singh
Alexandre Singh is as attracted to esoteric arcana as he is to prosaic popular culture. His multi-media project The Marque of the Third Stripe (2007), which centres on Adi Dassler, the founder of the Adidas sportswear brand, includes Singh’s own biography of Dassler, inspired by the writings of horror-fantasy author H.P. Lovecraft. His installation Assembly Instructions (Tangential Logic) (2008) comprises numerous white-framed photocopies of images — white rabbits in magician’s hats, the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, a Jack of Hearts playing card — that are linked and juxtaposed according to Singh’s own enigmatic system of ‘tangential logic’, ‘tangential magick’, ‘vectors of confession’ and ‘emotional pornography’. Working with transparencies of images and overhead projectors, Singh elaborates on these connections in a lecture/performance that sets one’s mind to wandering through the visual archive.
