Lyndi Sales

Stand B4

It’s the monumental installation The person that you see physically is just the tip of the iceberg that gives its name to South-African artist Lyndi Sales’ solo exhibition. The title is a quote from cellist Yo-Yo Ma; it shows the artist’s interest for the invisible, the systems and forces that are at the origins of our world.

The perception of what is around us, Man’s fascination for what’s beyond him, his scientific or spiritual research — to understand reality… These questions feed Lyndi Sales’ work, that mixes mediums and techniques — cutting, painting, drawing, sewing, collaging — to create a multifaceted, rich, vibrant and delicate body of work. In each of her pieces, scientific images, microscope views, esoteric theory models or references to different spiritualties superimpose themselves. This results in powerful, subtle and polisemic works of art.

The person that you see… is thus inspired by neo-theosophies that take into consideration the existence of different bodies (astral, mental et cetera) — our physical and visible body being a miniscule part of what we are.

The indigo coloring the work furthers this questioning about the visible and the invisible: Numerous scientific experiences have shown that this color is indiscernible from blue or violet for the majority of humanity. As a symbol of a dimension we cannot fathom, indigo is associated to the third eye in the new age philosophy. But this work also reflects an ecologic dimension: satellite images of the poles as well as films of collapsing icebergs, unveiling transversal and unexpected cross-sections.

This ensemble specifically created for Art Paris Art Fair is made of works that each represents an element. The person that you see… embodies the water (element), but the fire, air and earth are also present. The colors used are highly symbolic: one finds indigo blue for The person that you see…, vegetal green for Hierarchy, red made of the artist’s own blood for Sever as well as a chromatic explosion for Ammonium perchlorate crystal.

Lyndi Sales’ proposition constitutes a personal encyclopedia of Man established systems to understand the world.
