Ashley Hans Scheirl — L’or dans l’oeil — Loevenbruck Gallery — Exhibition — Slash Paris

Experimenting with their own sexuality and identity and thus continually questioning sexual and gender attributions are at the center of Ashley Hans Scheirl’s ’life art’. Living in London for 16 years they became part of a scene of queer and transgender artists and, on their fortieth birthday started to take testosterone. From then on s*he referred to herself as Hans and he. On their sixtieth birthday Scheirl adopted the gender-variant first name Ashley and is since referred to as she. Without trying to go from A to B, Ashley Hans Scheirl performatively chose the (anti-)identity ’transgender’. 1 The artist, who achieved international fame already in the late 1980s for her experimental film and video works, recently made highly regarded contributions to the documenta 14 in Kassel and Athens (2017) and the Lyon Contemporary Art Biennale (2019) together with Jakob Lena Knebl with whom she*he represented Austria at the 2022 Venice Biennale.

There the artistic duo conceived a stage-like installation, entitled Invitation of the Soft Machine and Her Angry Body Parts, in which they unfurled their entire artistic cosmos — from paintings, sculptures, textile works, photographs to a fashion collection and a publication in the form of a magazine.

Echoing the project designed by the artist for Art Basel Hong Kong, Loevenbruck gallery is pleased to program the third monographic exhibition of Ashley Hans Scheirl and to present the artist’s latest paintings.

This fall, Scheirl and Knebl will present their first institutional exhibition in France at the Palais de Tokyo, curated by Daria de Beauvais. The duo’s next big show will be at the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, Germany in 2024.
