In Congo-Brazzaville, DeLaVallet Bidiefono is regarded as a pioneer in contemporary dance. In a land that is always on the brink of explosion and that is still painfully recovering from the successive civil wars of the 1990s, contemporary dance is a weapon.

In Au-delà, a show created for the Festival d’Avignon 2013, the choreographer, musician and dancer originally from Pointe-Noire wanted to tell how he tangled with death and how the people of his country cope. Six dancers, two musicians and a singer: the artists present themselves as warriors in a battle for a better life; they fight with the weapons of dance, accompanied by a text by Dieudonné Niangouna. Animated by an incredible vital energy, they tell us how a particular relationship with “the beyond” cultivates an artistic, and therefore political, engagement.
