David Hockney — New Photographic Drawings
Exhibition
David Hockney
New Photographic Drawings
Past: January 24 → March 9, 2019
David Hockney does not claim to be a photographer. Rather, he is a painter who has used photography since the 1970s to capture elements of the world around him, which he observes with inexhaustible curiosity. He then arranges, recomposes and reworks them in paint, producing what he describes as “Photographic Drawings”.
Fascinated in recent times by the question of reverse perspective and its philosophical and artistic implications, he recently produced four vast new Photographic Drawings, which we will present on the four walls of our salon. In particular, we can see the artist posing in the middle of his workshop in Los Angeles, surrounded by his most recent works (some of which were exhibited during the 2017 retrospective of his work at the Centre Pompidou).
Having chosen to paint on canvases whose lower corners have been cut off in order to materialise his concept of reverse perspective, one of these Photographic Drawings has the same shape. At 81 years of age, David Hockney continues to demonstrate incredible vitality.
