Deirdre McLoughlin
Sculpter le vide

Past: January 18 → February 22, 2013

Born in Dublin, ceramic sculptor Deirdre McLoughlin lives and works in Amsterdam. She has had solo exhibitions in Ireland, Holland, Korea and Japan, where she is also in public collections. Her work has its origins in a fascinating dialogue with classical ceramic forms and functions. The perfection of her forms and surfaces lends a far greater physical presence to her pieces than their size would suggest. This constant quest for perfection finds close kin in Japanese tradition, where the connection between beauty and skill is understood more subtly than in the West; McLoughlin’s time working with the avant-garde Sōdeisha group of ceramic sculptors is still palpable thirty years later. This exhibition presents work from three of the artist’s most recent series — Life, I Am Too and Light Gatherers and is part of the National Craft Gallery of Ireland Touring Programme.

“…her instinct for the contained void, for the tensions inherent in shape, is fantastic ”
