Nude women in the Hungarian photography

Everlasting and much studied subject of art, the woman’s body is one of the photographers most beloved themes.
Following the political and social changes at the beginning of the 20th century, women found a brand new identity for herself.

Until then identified either as a saint in the maternal role, either as a prostitute, women broke off theses images of the past and finally gained a full-fledged existence. This phenomenon is moreover significant in Eastern Europe, where the traditional man-woman roles were more rigid then in the western part of the continent. World famous Hungarian photographers of the era presented on the exhibition “formELLES”; such as Brassaï, Munkacsi and Kertész; immortalized on their pictures this self discovery, this pursuit of a new feminine identity.

The exhibition also wishes to compare theses nude pictures of women of the firsts decades of the 20th century with the contemporary ones. Because emptied of all contexts, theses photos are the footprints of History, of its habits, customs, and beauty conceptions…
