Jan Kopp — Constellations ordinaires

Past: May 12 → July 7, 2012

Marion Meyer Contemporain is presenting for the first time, in May, the work of Jan Kopp: the exhibition will bring together videos, sculptures and drawings.

It will focus on the ideas of rhythm and the measurement of time experienced on the scale of the artist’s daily perceptions. These ideas will show a particular sensitivity through the animated video Das Gebäude, which presents the slow transformation of a Berlin building which the artist had observed for several years. The spare means used (pencil, eraser, a sometimes obvious paper support) makes this paradox between imperceptible fragility and inexorable movement visible.

Always in a position to create links between art, territory and society — as well as hybrids between dance, theatre, architecture and film — Jan Kopp uses different forms of artistic expression without favouring any of them: installations, performances, films, videos, sculptures, painting and photography. He institutes a permanent dialogue between created images and borrowed images, calling on — using simple means — juxtapositions of meaning and the reversal of situations.

Born in 1970 in Frankfurt am Main, Jan Kopp lives and works between Paris and Berlin.

A major exhibition was devoted to him at the Maubuisson abbey (Val d’Oise) in 2011. At the moment, Le Tourniquet (2011), the fruit of an experiment on the drawing medium, can be visited in three places, the Collège des Bernardins in Paris, at Fresnoy in the group exhibition Visions fugitives and at the FRAC Alsace for Affinités déchirures & attractions.

A monograph on his work has just been published by Filigranes with texts by Jacinto Lageira, Joris Lacoste and Olivier Grasser.
