Rather introspective than retrospective, her solo exhibition Vous les entendez ? at the Palais de Tokyo brings together a collection of existing pieces and new productions to present the different facets of her work: from painting to installation by way of photography, video and her prolific drawing practice. Criss-crossed by invisible presences and electric silences, it resonates across garden the level of the building like a landscape to wander through, shrouded in a penumbra unsettled by the whiteness of the lights emanating from the works themselves. In installations that play upon opacities and transparencies and confrontations between opposites, enamelled steel, copper, cotton, glass, red ink, fabric, mirrors and metal become electrified as they enter into contact with accumulated objects and pieces of furniture.

Conceived as a single installation in dialogue with the architecture of the Palais de Tokyo, Vous les entendez ? [Do You Hear Them?] attests to Laura Lamiel’s keen attention to space, whether that of the exhibition or that of her work. Punctuated by pieces scattered across garden level of the Palais, the exhibition unfurls in concentric waves, using chromatic cues to invite us to penetrate into a “studio-brain” and allow ourselves to be guided by sounds recorded on the banks of the Ganges.

As suggested by the exhibition’s title, inspired by Nathalie Sarraute’s book, here Laura Lamiel’s oeuvre unfolds through echoes, vibrations and buzzing but also through silences and respirations. Just as thought moves by forward and backward leaps, flashes and recollections, Vous les entendez ? opens up interior and exterior worlds in a kind of chiaroscuro. It invites us to pay attention to both the voices within us and to those of the multitudes of identities and states of being in the world surrounding us.
