In Situ Fabienne Leclerc is giving pride of place to Martin Dammann in the framework of its double programming with two successive exhibitions “Dieser Feuer” and “Zeichnung.” The gallery, now located in the Marais, also occasionally invests temporary venues. This second event once again will be held in the Rouart studio in the 16th arrondissement, Berthe Morisot’s former studio, which has been a home as well as a place for artistic exchanges since the 1930s.
Zeichnung (“drawing”), at the In Situ gallery, is composed of a body of drawings, created as a counterpart of the exhibition at the Rouart studio. In a desire to create an oscillation between figuration and dissolving, Zeichnung is conceived as an ongoing dialogue between lines and color without ever giving in to abstraction. Martin Dammann’s drawing thus swings between the image, which is represented, and the framework of this representation: simultaneously, the design’s structure makes the image emerge and the image lets its own structure be glimpsed.
Martin Dammann’s attention is focused on the many aspects of the relationship — frequently contradictory — that the images have with what they represent and consequently with what they are not. This is, for example, the case for the anonymous war photo, an important starting point in Dammann’s work. Questions on history, identity, representation and perception confront each other in the artist’s oeuvre.
