Mimmo Rotella — Tornabuoni Art — Exhibition — Slash Paris

From March 30 to June 9, Tornabuoni Art Gallery is presenting the largest retrospective on Mimmo Rotella ever assembled in Paris. About fifty artworks of the golden period of the artist, his rarest production dating from 1954 to 1964, will be on display.

Mimmo Rotella has been one of the artists, during the fifties, who deeply transformed the language of art through materials taken from the urban landscape, more particularly through advertising posters which he collected and transformed by laceration. In 1954, he discovered advertising posters as a new way of expression and began creating an artistic gesture to which he would stay faithful his entire life : the ripping. Through the double décollage (the poster is detached from the wall and ripped in the artist’s studio), Mimmo Rotella has collected images from the street to rise them up to the artistic rank. In 1958, with the series Cinecittà, he worked on cinema posters, creating some of the most recognizable and iconic artworks of the entire decade.

The exhibition is documented by a catalog in three languages (French, English, and Italian), with a preface by Bruno Corà, 250 pages, 73 illustrations of artworks, selected biography and bibliography. The catalog is available at the gallery.
