The exhibition Où sont nos thunes ? (Where’s Our Money?) explores women’s economic power. Although equal pay has been a legal right in theory since 1972, the figures still do not add up. Women’s financial independence remains far from being achieved, profoundly shaping relationships between genders.

Why do women still feel uncomfortable talking about money when it is such a crucial factor in their emancipation? Shut out of the most highly valued careers, paid less than men, forced into part time work, and burdened with invisible and unpaid labour, women are also discouraged from investing. They make up 97% of single parent households living in precarious conditions and are left to navigate the difficult management of scarcity, the struggle to make ends meet, and the repayment of debts that carry a sense of shame.

While civil rights and reproductive rights are victories inherited from the feminists who came before us, economic power remains a male preserve. Women are still too often left standing at the edge of the table, watching a feast they have helped prepare while being expected to settle for the crumbs.

By bringing together artworks, literary texts, and archival objects, the exhibition seeks to break the taboo surrounding money at work, within the family, in the intimacy of relationships, and even in the way children are raised. It aims to open up a conversation that can lead to genuine economic equality between women and men, and to a society in which being born a girl does not mean being condemned from the outset to greater precarity and financial insecurity.
