Pierre-Lin Renié
Long Term Observation

Past: November 2 → December 18, 2010

Pierre-Lin Renié was born in 1966 and lives and works in Bordeaux. After studying photography at the École Nationale Supérieure of Arles, he was awarded a research stipend at the Clark Art Institute in 2002 and another at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2004. A specialist in the history of photographic publishing, he organized, as the director of collections at the Goupil Museum in Bordeaux; several exhibitions and catalogues including: Gérôme & Goupil in 2000, Une image sur un mur in 2005 and Le Musée des rieurs in 2006. Pierre-Lin Renié currently teaches the history of art and photography at the École des Beaux-Arts of Bordeaux.

The artist is not one facet of the personality, to which may be added that of historian, curator, critic and teacher, but the synthesis of all of them.

A curious mind, an exacting researcher, a rigorous critic, Pierre-Lin Renié defines his own work:

“This direct and frontal recording work, in the line of the ‘documentary style’, takes form in the production of plates printed with pigmented inks. Modest and standardized formats (A3), they update publishing practices that emerged at the very beginning of photography, assimilating it with the print. A standardized layout singularizes the images, or organizes them in groups of two, four or six. Each image can be reused; it can appear in different formats and in several plates, introducing a potential dynamic between the entire corpus, even if each plate retains its autonomy. By connecting various places and moments, an unstable mental geography is created, reworked by memory.”

In terms of this work, we can speak, in the sense that objectivist poetry keeps the metaphor at a distance, of image without an image.

Exhibition organized with the support of Cnap, National Center of Art (with the first exposure), Ministry of Culture and Communication.
