Rui Moreira — Inner Monsoon
Exhibition
Rui Moreira
Inner Monsoon
Past: March 20 → May 22, 2010
Portuguese artist Rui Moreira, born 1971, works exclusively on paper, his chosen medium for translating physical and mental experiences.
This exhibition, Inner Monsoon, is his first in France. It presents a series of ’inner landscapes’, three groups of works on paper, figurative and abstract, with a unity of flow and movement. The pieces alternately evoke divinities, landscapes and geometric construction. Each work is realies with minutia and great patience, the lines being repeated endlessly, like a ritual enacted mnemonic exercise.
The works are characterised by their lack of visual frontier so the spectator is able to view the work from within. They have neither chronology nor linear spatialisation. Arising from travels in Morocco and India, inner voyages and outer rhizomes form landscapes that translate the inner displacement whether spatial, temporal, physical or mental.
Rui Moreira’s works on paper have been nourished by many and varied influences: navigation tools such as stratospheric maps or Google Earth images; movie history such as Tarkovsky, Hitchcock, Herzog or Kubrick; Stockhausen’s ’Invisible melodies’, the music of Bach, and traditional Indian, Japapnese, Portuguese, Arab music; significant historic works such as Piero della Francesca’s frescoes or Herboerto Helder’s poetry.
