We discovered Sophia Fassi’s work when she graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 2020 (in the studio of Dominique Gauthier, François Boisrond and James Bloedé, who introduced her to drawing).

It was during her studies that the young Franco-Moroccan artist discovered her passion for art history, taught by François-René Martin. The Louvre became her second school, and she happily devoted herself to copying the Ancients, such as Titien and Poussin. Some of her works show the influence of Romantic masters such as Delacroix, but also the heirs of Realism like Courbet and Manet, who themselves admired the Spanish masters of the Golden Age. Her portrait of Monika. Rue de Suffren is a tribute to Manet’s Torrero, who sublimates death through the use of black and cold colours.

With her mastery of oil painting and her talent as a colourist, Sophia Fassi builds her compositions from a solid drawing in the heritage of great painting, with subjects that she transposes into a humanist and contemporary interpretation.

The human figure and the portrait are at the centre of her pictorial research, which magnifies the density of the material through her personal brushstrokes for a sensual, realistic rendering.
