Tout balayer, tout assimiler
Autour de Supports/Surfaces, 1969//2017

Past: October 5 → November 18, 2017

50 years after the creation of «Supports-Surfaces», Galerie La Forest Divonne, puts up five artists that are linked to the group, whether they actively participated in it, accompanied it, agreed with it or contested it. The exhibition will show historical pieces of each artist that marked the 70’s and 80’s, alongside with recent pieces which will be the core of the exhibition in order to the differents answers Vincent Bioulès, Christian Bonnefoi, Pierre Buraglio, Jean-Michel Meurice, and Jean-Pierre Pincemin have built to the issues facing a painter of their generation.

From abstraction to figuration, through collages, canvas or even shower curtains the five artists have participated for the 50 last years to the great vitality of painting, and contributed to write its history.

Supports Surface : affiliations to the group marked its members and their contemporaries. However, the movement only lasted three years from 1969 to 1972. Bernard Ceysson talks about Supports-Surfaces as a « moment ». A moment that shaped french painting from the 60’s and the 70’s and crystallized its questioning. A moment of questioning and experimentation that starts before the creation of the group in the early 60’s : with the paintings on film roll by Jean-Michel Meurice or the assemblages used by Pierre Buraglio with fragments of canvas or windows, for instance.

The great explosion of the american abstraction, has pushed a whole generation of young french artists to rethink both practicing and teaching painting. This dynamic encouraged them to take painting out of the classical canvas, to look for the essential, pure, pictural gesture which is often done through focusing on color itself.

If it is a common questioning that is shared by these five artists, their personalities and answers assert themselves in different, sometime opposite ways, and they each have built very singular œuvres.
