Bakary Diallo — À propos — Slash Paris

Bakary Diallo is native of Kati, Mali. He began the practice of the visual arts and film art in the Conservatory of Arts and Crafts and Multimédia / Balla Fasséké Kouyaté in Bamako from where he directed the film “The Light” (2010) which stands up against the dictatorship and stages people, represented by lemons, who fights for democracy. “Les feuilles d’un temp”s (2010) is a tribute, between the lines, to women through the theme: childhood memories.

In 2010, Bakary Diallo enters the Studo National des arts contemporains du Fresnoy and realizes the movies “Dankumba” ( 2011 ) and “Tomo” ( 2012 ). Dankumba is a strange movie, between fiction and documentary. He questions visible and invisible, superstition: hope and fear, the mystery of the faith. Tomo : an abandoned territory because of the war (movie in bambara, local language). He tackles, in a symbolic approach, the violence of the war and the confusions bound to it. Bakary Diallo graduated from Fresnoy with these two movies and unanimously congratulated by the jury by a summa cum laude.

His works are essentially based on details and use daily life objects to build themselves. With strongly influenced images, from the aesthetic point of view, by the photography, Bakary Diallo practices a style of often very sharp and high paced editing. His stories are relatively logical in their structure but very simplified. They just seize the essential moment, the precise moment when the action occurs and takes the rest away. That gives to his works a kind of very contracted, strange and original narration. It is the reduction of the story to the strict least until reaching sometimes abstract or enigma.
