Daisuke Kosugi

Through film, sculpture, performance and text, Daisuke Kosugi develops seductive scenarios that enclose an underlying conflict between personal freedom and systems.

Whether describing how creativity is undermined by the creative industry at work in a post-fordist labour market, or through a narrative of creativity that cannot be converted into cultural or economic productivity measures, the artist analyzes these struggles through the lives of individuals. His semi-autobiographical films lead the audience into intimate experiences where conflict is presented in a physical and emotional way.

“I don’t want to tell people what they should feel,” he says, before adding, “The first step for empathy is to pay attention.” A sense of detail, inherited from Japan, from which he made a profession of faith.

Through layers of fiction and non-fiction, he develops an active mode of viewing, a storytelling method developed from his interest in empathy and the incommunicability of pain.
