La première sculpture de Baselitz, Modell für eine Skulptur, 1979, figurant à la Biennale de Venise en 1980 a soulevé une vive controverse. En tant que « modèle » et « idée de sculpture », elle porte en elle les caractères des œuvres qui vont suivre : refus de toute élégance, traitement brut et agressif, taille du bois à la hache et rehauts de peinture.
