Sicilia was born in 1954 in Madrid and lives in both Mallorca, Spain and Paris. Like many young artists, he seeks to escape from the history of art, to do paintings in which formal preoccupations are no longer in control. He says all his paintings already existed before he started working on them. As an example, he points to his studio walls in an old Paris factory building. Those crumbling, plastery surfaces have paintings already in them. They are paintings in themselves. In much of Sicilia’s art, the image only comes into focus after you pay attention to it for a while.
