Offrandes voilées
In 6 days: Sunday, October 12, 2025
From October 12th to January 25th, 2026
patricia kaersenhout’s transdisciplinary practice revolves around the persistence of colonialism. Her work focuses on political movements within the African diaspora and their relationship to feminism, sexuality, racism and the history of slavery.
The first of two recent films to be unveiled in the exhibition, Le retour des femmes colibris (2022) reenacts the Congress of Black Writers and Artists, held at la Sorbonne university in 1956, and imagines an encounter between Joséphine Baker, Jeanne and Paulette Nardal, Frida Kahlo and Suzanne Césaire. These visionary women, pioneers of the Négritude movement and cultural revolutions, reappropriate history through a cinematic fresco which weaves connections between continents, artistic movements and anticolonial struggles. In Offrandes voilées, the Òrìs.à — divinities from the Yorùbá spiritual tradition — rise to confront the legacy of the 1685 Code Noir, a decree by Louis XIV regulating the life of Black people, whether free or enslaved, across the French territories. Through ritual practice, poetry and spiritual invocation, the film recomposes colonial history as a shared wound — which demands not guilt, but truth, humility and a radical transformation.
patricia kaersenhout is represented by AKINCI Gallery in Amsterdam.
