Vieilles coques et jeunes récifs — Frac Île-de-France, Paris, Romainville Le Frac Île-de-France présente avec Vieilles Coques et jeunes récifs un parcours constellé de démarches sensibles qui évoquent les ... CritiqueAthletes, as well as scientists and artists, are all focused on the body, with hopes pinned on its adaptability and resilience at a time of global transition. Science fiction conjures up unlikely mutations and envisages the survival of humanity in the most varied contexts. Bodies that transform, mirroring the way in which athletes can sometimes adapt their metabolism and physiognomy to achieve new feats. The limits and potentials of the body and of what passes through it inform the work of the artists (works from the Frac collection and guest artists) in the exhibition Vieilles coques & jeunes récifs, which is inevitably inhabited by performance.
The works on show at Les Réserves bear witness to dialogues that are forged with other entities (Tracey Moffatt), rituals that are performed to invoke them, notably through music and song (Robin Girod, Camilo Restrepo, Colin Self). Personal mythologies (Ibrahim Meïté Sikely) then emerge via alternative channels and networks of perception and discussion (Prune Phi) and, ultimately, co-creative devices that expand them (Nicolas Faubert & Mona Young-eun Kim).
Like a reversible bag, or two parts of the same non-linear story, the exhibition can be visited from the Plateau to the Reserves or vice versa, and visitors are invited to take the paths of reading and interpretation they wish, by reading, looking, listening, touching, sitting on what is available — in short, to experience what surrounds them in their own way.

Colin Self — Hippodrome du Précariat Performance Saturday, May 4 4 PM → 7 PM
An ambulatory processional performance around the Frac in Romainville.
On a 20-minute loop, Colin, along with a group of instrumentalists and acrobats perform a circular choreography through and in front of the building, revolving around two deconstructed, interloping fugues.
They’re based on Smokey Robinson & The Miracles’ 1967 hit “The Tears of a Clown” and Mylène Farmer’s 1991 hit “Désenchantée”; two uplifting songs about despondence popularized during times of mass protest.
The English-French text performed will be a libretto co-authored and translated by French poet and musician Chouf. At times instrumental, at times acapella, Colin imagines the performance to be initially comical, unfolding into something…
4pm: 1st loop of Hippodrome du Précariat
5pm: guided tour with Alicia Reymond
6pm: 2nd loop of Hippodrome du Précariat

Colin Self (b. 1987 Oregon, USA) is an artist, composer and puppeteer based in Berlin Germany. They create music, performances, and new systems for interfacing with the human spirit, across a spectrum between the living and deceased.
Many of their practices revolve around the temporary assembly of communities. Also, their work envelops collaborative and dialogical experiments into play. Self has been running XOIR since 2013, an alternative modality of group singing, and co-founded a performance school in 2023 with their collaborator Monica Mirabile.
Their most recent commissions include “The World to Come”, composed for Berlin’s State Orchestra in 2020, “Tip the Ivy”, a semi-staged opera premiering in Graz in February 2022, and Performance Space NY in May 2022. Last year they were a resident artist at Callie’s Berlin and will be an artistic fellow at La Becque in Autumn 2024. Their third LP, respite ∞ levity for the nameless ghost in crisis will be out on RVNG Intl. in February 2025.
