Fiac 2012 original grid La FIAC 2012 en chiffres En attendant son ouverture le 18 octobre au Grand Palais, tour d’horizon de cette 39ème édition de la Fiac au travers de quelques chiffres.
FIAC continues its development and confirms its status as a major international art fair

For its 39th year, FIAC continues to build on past editions, developing and evolving while maintaining the strong features inherent to FIAC, including: its rigorous selection process, guaranteeing exemplary standards of quality; its broad scope, which allows for a balanced overview of modern and contemporary art and works by emerging artists; its firm foothold in the heart of Paris, working alongside public and private stakeholders in the world of arts and culture; and it’s acute perceptiveness surrounding current developments within the creative and intellectual fields, both on a Parisian and world wide scale.

Both international and French, FIAC has become one of the major events in artistic creation.

FIAC 2012 will bring together around 180 galleries from 24 countries at the Grand Palais. France will be represented by 61 galleries (or 34% of the exhibitors), followed by the United-States (30 galleries), Germany (24 galleries), Italy (12 galleries), Belgium (14 galleries), the United Kingdom (9 galleries), and Switzerland (6 galleries). Galleries from Denmark, Poland, Romania and the United Arab Emirates will be present for the first time.

41 galleries are participating for the first time or are returning to FIAC in 2012.

FIAC testifies once again this year to its openness to different forms of creation by amplifying its Hors les Murs programme: the development of outdoor projects in the Tuileries Garden, the Jardin des Plantes and various sites at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle; the enhancement of its programme of performances, artists’ films and the inauguration of conference programmes, along with associated projects such as R4 on Ile Seguin, all bare witness to FIAC’s myriad and successful collaborations and projects, all of which continue to be developed and expanded upon, now and in the years to come.

The synergies that FIAC develops with the stakeholders of Parisian cultural life through initiatives such as the Parcours Privé and the Nocturne des Galeries contribute to showcasing the Parisian arts scene and place the capital at the forefront of the international cultural scene.

The Lafayette sector and the Lafayette Prize

Level 1

For the Lafayette Sector, FIAC and its official partner, the Galeries Lafayette group, are once again presenting a support programme that was inaugurated in 2009 and designed for galleries featuring works from the emerging arts scene. This programme assembles 10 galleries selected for the quality of their prospective programming and on the basis of a specific project for FIAC featuring one or two artists. They are chosen by a jury comprising Guillaume Houzé (Sponsorship Director, Galeries Lafayette group, Paris), Stefan Kalmár (Artists’ Space, New York) Jean de Loisy (President of the Palais de Tokyo, Paris), Alessandro Rabottini (GAMEC, Bergame) and Sandra Terdjman (Kadist Art Foundation, Paris).

This programme provides each gallery with financial support for their participation in FIAC and will lead to the award of the 2012 Lafayette Prize, on Thursday 18 October.

The prize consists of the acquisition of a work by the Galeries Lafayette group, as well as the presentation of an exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo in October 2013, along with a grant for the production of a new project.

Carol Bove and Morag Keil, respectively, were the 2009 and 2010 laureates of the Lafayette Prize. Helen Marten, laureate of the 2011 Lafayette Prize will hold an exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo in autumn this year.

Hors les Murs

FIAC 2012 is enriching and enhancing its Hors les Murs programme in prestigious Parisian sites through exhibition pathways of outdoor works, conference cycles, performances and artists’ film screenings.

FIAC’s Hors les Murs projects are a major part of the event and each year they reach an increasingly wider audience and generate a growing interest among professionals from the art world.

The students of the Ecole du Louvre provide cultural mediation in the Tuileries Garden, but also in the sites of the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, presenting the works and answering visitors’ questions.

Tuileries garden

For the seventh consecutive year, FIAC is presenting a programme of outdoor works in the Tuileries Garden in association with the Domaine National du Louvre. A combination of the growing interest from galleries and artists and the exceptional context of the garden itself has meant that around twenty projects have been brought together each year, including installations, sculptures, performances or sound works, which were presented in the garden’s alleys, ponds and lawns, thus interacting with the public.

With more than 480 000 visitors during FIAC week in 2011, this programme was a great success amongst the public. Testifying to the unique character of this programme, a retrospective book was published, presenting around forty projects that have been shown since 2006 in the Tuileries Garden. FIAC initiated the idea, and the book was co-published with Dilecta, in collaboration with the Musée du Louvre.

Jardin des Plantes and Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle

Following the success of the first edition, for the second consecutive year, FIAC is presenting a programme of contemporary artworks. The works will be installed both outdoors and indoors, in the Jardin des Plantes, but also in atypical sites at the Muséum, such as La Ménagerie, Les Grandes Serres, and the Grande Galerie de l’Évolution.

This project provides an opportunity to showcase a unique programme based on a contemporary issue that is entirely suited to the site: art, nature, biodiversity and the environment. The Muséum’s living plant collections serve as a medium and illustration for the spread of knowledge regarding plants, plant ecosystems, the interaction between plants and animals, and relationships between Humans and Nature.

It is a pedagogical site that targets a very wide audience, ranging from young children to scientific researchers.

Performances, Cinéphémère & Conferences

Openings — Auditorium of the Musée du Louvre

For the fifth consecutive year, the Louvre and FIAC will present the performance programme “Ouvertures/Openings”. By integrating the latest trends in performative practices and interdisciplinary exchanges in contemporary art, this programme is situated on the crossroads between music, contemporary dance, performance and theatre. It presents a series of experiments in the form of live actions that explore new avenues in the field of artistic performance. It has combined works from artists such as Claude Closky, Guy de Cointet, Tony Conrad, Jeremy Deller, Dan Graham, Rodney Graham, Gary Hill, William Kentridge, or Christian Marclay.

This year, in association with the Auditorium du Louvre, the FIAC will present a performance by Matt Mullican, Uncovering that person, on Friday 19 October at 7 pm. Matt Mullican’s work investigates the language of the subconscious mind, combining forms, techniques and media. Diagrams, objects, codes and systems form a symbolic world that is both haunting and porous, and to which the artist subjects his body, undergoing extreme experiments. That person is the name given to his other self, who emerged under hypnosis, and with whom Mullican periodically enters into dialogue, or extricates himself from.

An exceptional performance by Hassan Khan, Superstructure, will be presented on Saturday 20 October at 9 pm. Through a characteristic fusion of precomposed structures and live performance, Hassan Khan delves into his repertoire to select extracts based on his various pieces. In a continuous flow, this process of hybridisation in real time presents everything from works for strings and percussion modulated with the minimalist electronics of “a short story based on a distant memory”, to new versions of the radical electronics of “The Big One”, a New Wave Shaabi composition with heavy, ever-changing rhythms.

Finally, a performance by Grand Magasin, Bilan de compétences, will be presented on Sunday 21 October at 7 pm with: Antoine Bernollin, François Chaignaud, Etienne Charry, Ondine Cloez, Jacqueline Hiffler, François Hiffler, Babeth Joinet, Pascale Murtin, Dominique Pautas, Victor Ramos, Christophe Salengro, Claudia Triozzi and Philippe Moja on sound.

Irrespective of the words that it pronounces, a voice evokes a unique story and sketches a self portrait through its timbre, colour, phrasing and volume. When the very meaning of the words completes the tableau, we touch on the mysteries of self-description, redundancy and mirror-play. This realm constitutes a maze that has remained eternally unexplored, which Grand Magasin tirelessly probes.

Also…

In addition to the Ouvertures/Openings programme, FIAC has developed a cycle of performances in various outdoor or indoor sites in Paris, in the Grand Palais, the Tuileries Garden or the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, depending on the specificities of each performance.

Cinéphémère — Tuileries Garden

For the third consecutive year, in association with the Fondation d’Entreprise Ricard and the Musée du Louvre, FIAC will present Cinéphémère in the Tuileries Garden. Cinéphémère is a 14- seat cinema installed in a purpose-built shipping container. A dozen or so artists’ films, each lasting a maximum of 30 minutes, will be screened daily during FIAC.

Over 40 internationally renowned artists’ films were screened in 2011 in Cinéphémère, including films by Yto Barrada, Peter Downsbrough, Karen Kilimnik, Claire Fontaine, Jeff Mills, Emilie Pitoiset, Ulla Von Brandebourg, Anna Gaskell, T.J. Wilcox, David Lamelas & Hildegarde Duane, or Julien Prévieux.

Conferences

FIAC 2012 is organising a cycle of three round table talks based on the theme “Art and Ecology: a question of taste or science?” at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle in association with COAL (Coalition pour l’Art et le Développement Durable).

Each round table discussion presents a dialogue between an artist, a scientist and a philosopher, related to the theme of the potential interactions between art and science.

FIAC is organising a cycle of three parallel conferences, under the direction of Patricia Falguières and Elisabeth Lebovici, within the framework of the seminar “Something you should know” held at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales.
