Critique
This year, for the fourteenth Propos d’Europe, an annual contemporary art exhibition fostering encounters between emerging and established European artists and their creations, the Hippocrène Foundation’s guest is the Berlin-based Haubrok Foundation.
The former studio of the modernist architect Robert Mallet-Stevens is hosting a selection of works from the Haubrok Collection based on the architecture of that period. Entitled Thoughts that breathe, this exhibition — the Hippocrène Foundation’s third collaboration with a private European contemporary art foundation — will be highlighting the work of four internationally famous artists for the first time: Carol Bove, Martin Boyce, Bojan Šarčević and Markus Schinwald.
As well as the dialogue set up between the works from the Haubrok Collection and the space designed by Mallet-Stevens, the exhibition will be tinged with a certain seasonal melancholy. Not only will the pieces interact with and respond to the design and architecture of the time — with Martin Boyce and Bojan Šarčević each exploring and questioning architecture and modern design — but they will also provide an echo of autumn, strongly present everywhere both within and outside the exhibition, thus linking two distinct areas together through art.

The purpose of the Berlin-based Haubrok Foundation is to promote contemporary art by staging exhibitions, and by sponsoring and facilitating art projects. The Foundation’s main asset consists of the key works of the Haubrok Collection, which contains over 900 pieces in the realms of photography, sculpture and conceptual art, currently the Foundation’s priority area.
