The Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain invite the public to celebrate 30 years of patronage and exhibitions. Throughout the course of the year, the community of artists who have forged its history will return to share their art in the spaces on Boulevard Raspail.

The celebration will be in two parts, featuring some of the most emblematic and spectacular works in the Fondation Cartier’s history. Vivid Memories, the first stage of this anniversary year, promises to surprise viewers with a continuously evolving presentation from May to September.

Works such as Marc Newson’s airplane, James Lee Byars’ monumental golden sphere, Panamarenko’s submarine, Raymond Hains’s Brise-lames, Chéri Samba’s paintings, Moebius’s notebooks, Ron Mueck’s sculpture In Bed and Bodys Isek Kingelez’s city will be presented over the weeks and months. The artists themselves have made a point of participating in this event in order to commune with the public through their chosen mediums. David Lynch will design a theater specifically to show artists’ films and embark upon a journey through the memory of the Fondation Cartier.

Issey Miyake will invoke night with a spectacular lightfilled installation in the garden and along the ground floor.

Artists such as Patti Smith, Jean-Michel Alberola, Alessandro Mendini, and Agnès Varda will celebrate the long-enduring links which the Fondation Cartier has forged with all the artists present, as well as the sense of loyalty that has characterized this 30-year history. Vivid Memories tells an alternative history of contemporary art, one that emphasizes the value of human relationships with artists when it comes to building a successful museum program. Tour guides will share the story of each work with the public, bringing to From October 2014, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain will undergo a transformation under the direction of Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio.

Both architects have enjoyed a familiarity with the space.

For the un monde réel exhibition in 1999, they placed a series of robots on the vast ground floor, and returned in 2008 for the Exit installation — a hi-tech show that made the flux of populations visible in real time in a series of animated maps — presented in Native Land, Stop Eject.

Using new technologies, their projects have blurred the boundaries between architecture and design. To celebrate its anniversary, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain has given Diller and Scofidio free reign to develop an ambitious project that creates a dialogue between the past and the future. Both architects like to work with artists from diverse fields and will create a living and continuously evolving collaborative space.

To celebrate this anniversary year, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain has developed a digital platform, that can be accessed via its website and all supporting media.

A hub through which to discover 30 years of contemporary art through numerous tales told for the first time, the heart of the platform focuses on the various events that will be held in Jean Nouvel’s building and in the extramural program.

Visitors to the site can also enjoy an exclusive online program of artists’ projects specifically designed for the Internet.
