Le Cabaret du Néant — Chefs-d’œuvre de la collection des Beaux-Arts et œuvres contemporaines

With reference to the famous themed cabaret, founded in Montmartre at the end of the 19th century, that deployed its parodic and funereal ambiance by making light of morbid situations with inflammatory irony, the Frac Île-de-France presents, at the Château de Rentilly, an exhibition created by students, which combines contemporary artists with masterpieces.

If the city of tomorrow is taking form on the coasts, frontiers and jungles of today’s Europe, then gratitude and hospitality are not its founding pillars. Just as the fact of welcoming the other can be envisaged only because it is prevented, then hospitality today is countered, or even illegal.

In all cultures the tree symbolises life, its force, longevity, beauty and fecundity. This exposition fills the different spaces of the Collège des Bernardin — the nave, the old sacristy, the moat and the garden — and presents works which manifest the richness and complexity of this greatly symbolic subject.

Mandrake a disparu

Mandrake’s disappearance purposefully alludes to primitive cinema but also incarnates a space of complicity. Illusion paradoxically becomes what makes things visible; the magic trick gives us a way of seeing at the periphery of perception and the magician becomes an intermediary accompanying the birth and disappearance of the image.

His polymorphous art passes by way of photography, video, drawing and installation, as so many ways of re-enacting the act of “withdrawal”, of bringing about, if not an event, then at the very least an opposite posture. And if the artist’s approach seems elusive, mistrusting codes and representation, it is in no way an evasion.
