Paul Pouvreau — Au propre comme au figuré

With his new work, les “Invasives”, Pouvreau continues his thirty-year project of hijacking household objects, those insignificant things that take over our modes of consumption. He overturns the codes of classical representation in photography. No anecdotes, no certainty. There is nothing that is “ready to think” or “ready to see”.

Paul Pouvreau uses everyday materials, household utensils, dust, cardboard packaging, plastic bags and advertising posters to construct poetic spaces and moments in time. He creates incidents that stand out in a daily life made up of dreary signs by illuminating it with meaning and little visual pleasures.

In partnership with the association Ville Ouverte, Les Douches la Galerie regularly gives a free hand to French artothèques [art libraries] to curate an exhibition at the gallery in order to pay tribute to the work done by the forty or so artothèques located all over France, where they play a major role in spreading contemporary art.

Be it through exaggeration, ludicrous actions, or the transformation of meaning, the artists let us glimpse a reality where reason has been unseated and the status-quo undone. Our “stubborn quest for sense”, our will to give everything meaning is thus unsettled by their manifold interpretations.
