Dominique Petitgand — La Maréchalerie, Versailles
La Moindre Anomalie, Dominique Petitgand’s solo exhibition at the Maréchalerie in Versailles, is an experience to be lived as much as it is to be seen. By blurring the boundaries between listening and looking, between understanding and mystery, the artist challenges and explores our attention. This exhibition, meant to be heard as much as viewed, invents an architectural reflection that, though immaterial, deeply engages the senses.
Dominique Petitgand does not offer a work to be merely observed, but an experience to be lived, where listening is both a tool for exploration and disorientation. Visitors are immersed in dialogic threads, becoming, despite themselves, speakers forced to reconstruct a narrative in reverse, to catch fleeting, swirling phrases that strike them before they can be understood. The artist plays on the idea of “capturing” rather than passively listening, turning each visitor into an actor in a spectacle whose rules remain unknown.
The architecture of the Maréchalerie, with its heights and volumes, becomes an instrument in its own right. Sounds, diffused with poetic precision, resonate differently depending on where one stands, creating fragmented, dreamlike soundscapes. Wall inscriptions, ceiling numbers… Everything contributes to making the visit an active exploration, where sight and hearing are engaged in a continuum of sensations that transcends the visible. Petitgand thus integrates the visitor into an unprecedented relationship with space, where inhabiting a place means experiencing it, living it, even getting lost in it.
While the exhibition questions our relationship with listening and attention in a world saturated with stimuli, it above all offers, through space, a pause, a moment to capture the infinitesimal, the unexpected, the anomaly. Silences, interruptions, and suspended phrases create a tension between presence and absence, between understanding and mystery, ultimately returning us to what eludes us: a breath, an echo, an unexpected resonance.
