With Artothèques en ruralité the Centre national des arts plastiques is leading an unprecedented project of significant scope aimed at promoting contemporary art throughout the entire country. This is achieved through the commissioning production and distribution of new limited edition works by contemporary artists with a particular focus on mid career artists an attention worthy of praise.
With a budget of 4 million euros this groundbreaking initiative anchors contemporary art in the most remote territories far from major urban centers. It does so by strengthening the presence of art libraries and inventing new ways to disseminate art.
The project is part of an effort to bring contemporary art closer to the people. It highlights the diversity and dynamism of art libraries which are active and committed structures both within and beyond major urban hubs. These libraries make intimate access to today’s art available to all. By providing access to a collection of loanable artworks and distributing them in open and welcoming spaces the network of art libraries stands as a unique player in the world of artistic creation.
While art “artothèques” which emerged in the 1980s already allow everyone to borrow artworks for a personal encounter with art Artothèques en ruralités strengthens their existence enables the opening of new branches and could well enhance their sustainability by formalizing their mission on several administrative fronts.
This initiative offers recognition worthy of the artistic scope of the project. Centered around a modular structure intelligently designed to transform into an ephemeral display system developed by designer Martial Marquet a specialist in collective use furniture the twelve artists’ prints address the challenge of plastically transcribing the diversity of nature. The collection gifted to all participating art libraries unfolds a delightful panorama of polyphonic visions. These range from the magical realism of Maxime Rossi and Capucine Vanderbrouck to the raw even brutal approach of Mathieu Mercier whose stunning work subverts the reading of reality and the very medium he employs through the use of Pantone swatches. The sensitive abstractions of Paul Pagk, Gaetano Cunsolo and Jacques Julien are present alongside the more conceptual works of Pierre Charpin and the exotic dreamlike whimsy of Éléonore False Françoise Quardon and Stéphanie Sagot. The collection culminates in Hélène Delprat’s baroque interpretation of Lucretius’ De Rerum Natura. This composition with its disconcerting parallelism depicts nature animals and humans locked in a fantastical symbolic and grotesque struggle where the tragic mirrors the ridiculous.
An unexpectedly relevant response to a political ambition that might have been met with skepticism in its general formulation this Cnap led initiative offers a twofold advance in addressing the challenges of art accessibility. Beyond its concrete benefits for rural cultural landscapes and the artists involved Artothèques en ruralités sheds a welcome light on the work of venues run by passionate individuals dedicated to sharing art in their own way. They extend the reach of sophisticated works and bring them to life for everyone everywhere.
