Like a dive into a fascinating in-between that echoes her use of both painting and photography, My-Lan Hoang-Thuy’s work, presented in the project room of Galerie Semiose, glides subtly between figuration and abstraction, instant capture and painterly slowness.

Learn more In this new series, the artist continues her experimentation with the image, inscribing within it an alternative temporality, that of painting, and deepens the self-portrait by weaving together disappearance and presence, proximity and erasure. Between appearance and disappearance, My-Lan Hoang-Thuy’s practice unsettles our relationship to the image by pairing her instantaneous captures with a second temporality: that of painting. Disturbing the atmosphere, she lends to the silent context of her images the force of an emotion, of a gesture to be deciphered. In this variation on self-portraiture, the artist stares at the lens or turns away from it, exposes herself and withdraws, letting her features stretch and ripple across the solidified drips of the canvases that receive her impressions.In preparing her supports, the artist thwarts the fixation of the image without sinking into

spectral metaphor. Less readable (but less distorted) than in previous series, his body is revealed only in fragments, yet the face emerges, as if it no longer belonged solely to himself. All the more so as the text accompanying the presentation adds yet another layer of complexity to the whole and might well betray an excess of life. The artist’s belly, it notes, is round, full of a life to come ; perhaps that +1 which gives the exhibition its title… the +1 of a self still lost, yet imperceptibly expanded.
Behind the doubt, then, the story writes itself in its own way — mysterious, fragmented, and charged with a trompe-l’œil sensuality, whose reflections are born of other lives.
